Mr. Sultan serves as a Consultant Oesophago-Gastric and Weight Loss Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester, the leading specialist center in the UK. In 2019, he was appointed as the Greater Manchester Clinical Lead for Weight Loss Treatment and Oesophago-Gastric Cancer, and by 2023, he further distinguished himself by being appointed as the National Clinical Lead in Upper GI Cancer by NHS England.
His medical journey began in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he graduated from medical school in 2001 with an MBBS degree. Following this, Mr. Sultan dedicated two years to research in oesophageal and stomach cancer, earning a commendation for his Doctorate of Medicine Degree and a nomination for the Medical Sciences Doctoral Thesis Prize. His academic excellence continued to shine when, in 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Association of Surgeons’ Gold Medal and Prize, ranking as the top candidate among 130 in the UK at the Intercollegiate Examination in Surgery (FRCS).
Mr. Sultan honed his skills in oesophago-gastric cancer treatment as a senior trainee at the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit in Newcastle upon Tyne, under the mentorship of Professor SM Griffin OBE, at what is the largest unit of its kind in the UK. His expertise in weight loss treatment and bariatric surgery was further developed under Mr. P Small at the renowned Sunderland Royal Hospital. Additionally, he expanded his repertoire of skills by learning the technique of Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (MIO) from Professor JD Luketich at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a method that continues to be a key interest of his.
Mr. Sultan’s extensive training encompasses a wide array of procedures in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, including hernia repairs, cholecystectomy, anti-reflux surgery, gastrectomy, oesophagectomy, weight loss surgery, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. His contributions to the field have been recognized both nationally and internationally through his research presentations.
