Gastric Balloon Placement in Birmingham
Swallowing The Capsule
The process begins with the patient swallowing a capsule that contains the deflated balloon, attached to a thin tube. This is usually done in a doctor's office and does not require sedation. The patient swallows the capsule with water, and an X-ray is taken to ensure it has reached the stomach.
Inflating The Balloon
Once the capsule is in the stomach, the balloon is filled with saline solution through the catheter. The filling process takes about 15 minutes, and the balloon is filled with around 400 to 750 millilitres of saline, depending on the specific needs and the surgeon's recommendations.
Detaching The Catheter
When the balloon is filled and in position, the final step in the insertion process involves the careful removal of the thin catheter. The removal of the catheter is a gentle and meticulously conducted procedure, designed to ensure the comfort and safety of the patient.

What is a gastric balloon, and how does it help in weight loss?
A Gastric Balloon offers a non-surgical weight loss solution that reduces food intake by making you feel full. Trusted Weight Loss in Birmingham provides the swallowable gastric balloon, which does not involve surgery, anaesthesia, or endoscopy. You swallow a capsule containing the balloon, which inflates in the stomach to help control portion sizes and support weight loss.
Where is the Trusted Weight Loss clinic located in Birmingham?
You can find the Trusted Weight Loss clinic at Burcot Hall Hospital, Stoney Lane, Bromsgrove, B60 1LY, conveniently located for patients in Birmingham and surrounding areas.
Who is the consultant at the Birmingham clinic?
Mr. Robinson MD, MB, ChB, MMedSci, FRCS, MRCS, leads the Trusted Weight Loss team in Birmingham. He brings extensive experience in bariatric and general surgery and is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) under registration number 4216003.
What are the benefits of the gastric balloon?
The swallowable gastric balloon offers several key benefits:
- Non-surgical: You don’t need surgery or endoscopy.
- No anaesthesia: You avoid the need for general anaesthesia.
- Temporary: The balloon remains in place for a 4 months, giving you time to adjust eating habits and continue weight loss naturally.
- Quick procedure: You can complete the balloon placement in around 20 minutes.
- Effective: The balloon helps you feel full and supports significant weight loss.
How is the gastric balloon placed?
You swallow a small capsule containing the balloon, which attaches to a thin catheter. Once the balloon reaches your stomach, a clinician inflates it with liquid through the catheter and then removes the catheter. The entire process takes about 20 minutes, with no need for surgery or anaesthesia.
How much weight can I expect to lose with a gastric balloon?
Most patients lose between 10-15% of their total body weight within 4–6 months. The amount of weight you lose depends on how well you follow a healthy diet, exercise routine, and other lifestyle changes after balloon placement.

How long does the gastric balloon stay in the stomach?
The balloon stays in your stomach for 16 weeks (4 months). After that, it deflates and passes naturally through your digestive system. The clinic will monitor your progress to ensure safe expulsion of the balloon.
What are the potential risks or side effects of a gastric balloon?
After the short placement, you can continue with your life; however, you may have some symptoms for a few days such as nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. We will advise you on care and nutrition after placement and the best plan to resume your activities, such as gym and exercise.
Mr. Robinson will thoroughly explain these risks during the consultation and provide guidance on managing any symptoms.
What is the recovery time after gastric balloon placement?
Since this is a non-invasive procedure, you can usually return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. Some patients may experience mild nausea or discomfort as the stomach adjusts, but these symptoms typically disappear within a few days.
Mr. Robinson will thoroughly explain these risks during the consultation and provide guidance on managing any symptoms.
Is a swallowable gastric balloon better than dieting alone?
Yes! The Allurion Program, a combination of our unique swallowable gastric balloon and a supported lifestyle change program, leads to nearly 2.5 times the weight loss than a lifestyle change program alone, according to an independent study.1
In another study, three-quarters of participants who attempted to lose weight over a year through calorie-controlled or restricted diets (72% of participants), exercise programs or courses (22%), and pharmaceutical treatments (12%), did not achieve a clinically meaningful weight loss defined as at least 5% of their body weight. The evidence shows that these isolated methods alone are not enough.
The 6-month Allurion Program combines medical support and a weight-loss device (Allurion Gastric Balloon), digital tools (Allurion Connected Scale, Allurion Health Tracker and Allurion App) and nutritional coaching to kick-start your weight loss and help you form lifelong healthy habits to maintain the weight loss.

Can the gastric balloon procedure be done more than once?
Yes, if you wish to continue losing weight or avoid regaining weight, you can undergo a second gastric balloon procedure after the first one is removed. Mr. Robinson will assess your progress during follow-up consultations and help determine if a second balloon is appropriate.
